UPDATE RE NIGHTS AWAY PERMITS

To keep you informed re the issue of your Nights Away permit. The scheme requires all those wishing / delegated to be Nights Away Advisors / Assessors to have undertaken Module 25 of Adult Training [Assessing Learning] and to have completed a Nights Away Advisors/ Assessors course. Dates for theses County led courses have now been set and should be completed by 15th May.

It is hoped that Assessments can start soon after the completed courses as we do not wish for any section not to enjoy a Nights Away experience. The assessment will take the part of an informal chat ensuring that the applicant understands the Scheme and has read the related factsheets. This chat might well include your Group Scout Leader as ultimately they are responsible for standards within your group.

Our thanks go to all who have applied for a permit and advise that we will be contacting you shortly.

Yours in Scouting

The Scout Association has issued the attached 'Safety Advisory Notice' regarding the use of Pierceable Gas Cartridges.

To summarise; In the long term, equipment using this type of cartridge should be replaced, but meanwhile, Leaders are advised to check, carefully, to ensure that seals are in good condition and should record the inspection. In addition, use of such equipment should be closely supervised and, above all, cartridge changes and assembly should only be undertaken by adults, in the open and away from sources of ignition.

George Donnelly

It is with sadness that I pass on the news of George Donnelly’s death.I appreciate for many George’s Scout service ended prior to the involvement of many of the current leaders `in the District.

George was Scout leader for many years at the 12th and was a Cub/Scout at St Francis De Sales.He had to retire at 65 as was the rules at the time.He was a very active leader who gave freely of his time.

He passed away quietly in his sleep,aged 97.His funeral will take place at Blessed Sacrement Church at 12 noon on Friday 2nd May.

NIGHTS AWAY PERMIT SCHEME

Dear Leader

Hopefully by now you are aware that Headquarters have recently undertaken a review of the above mentioned scheme and have made various recommendations. The main recommendations affecting District permit holders are as follows;

1. The Nights Away Assessor can only recommend permits up to there own permit level.

2. The Nights Away Permit is reviewed separately from the applicants’ warrant/appointment review [This is not currently the case within District].

3. Nights Away Permits are not section specific

With the above points in mind all Nights Away Permits currently issued by District will [From January 2008] be up for renewal. It is hoped that the issuing of new permits, as well as new assessments, will take place in March. Your permit is still valid if you have planned camps/sleepovers.

It is the assessors recommendation that all applicants familiarise themselves with the permit scheme and have below listed Fact Sheets that may prove useful. It is also recommended that applicants have been a camp leader [within the last 4 years] up to the level of the permit that they are applying for.
