This summer Harry and I were lucky enough to be Walton On The Hill’s representatives at the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Hylands Park, Essex. We were part of the 40 people in the Merseyside Contingent who were part of the 40,000 people at the Jamboree. There was so much to do and see that it would fill this newsletter with every individual story about everything so we’ll just stick to some of our favourite parts. A great part of the Jamboree was all the parties that we attended. On the opening night was the UK Contingent party where we saw Lemar and Liberty X perform. However on Sunrise Day there was a rumour of U2 performing. Instead we saw the tribute bands My Winehouse and Coolplay. The activities that we took part it were also excellent. There was Trash, where we learnt about what we could do with our rubbish. There was Elements, where we learnt about the elements Fire, Wind, Water and Earth. There was also the faiths and beliefs zone where we learnt about all the different religions of the world. To get to know people better we as a contingent created a hug toll, meaning that to go past people had to hug us. Everyone thought it was great fun, however because of the language barrier some people never understood what a hug was. So we decided to learn how to say hug in almost 15 languages. We both had an absolutely brilliant time, a once in a lifetime experience with Scouts from all over the world. But we could not go to the World Jamboree without showing the world some Walton on the Hill traditions. So we played Sheriff with the Japanese, taught and sang ‘Their Aint No Flies on Us’ with the Portuguese and enjoyed Scouse with everyone in our Subcamp, a huge 2000 people. The friends we have made, the experiences we had are so amazing that you need to experience it yourself and we urge you to apply for the next Jamboree in Sweden 2011, because we already have. We would both just like to say another huge big thank you to the District Executive who helped pay for the trip, so THANKS. P.S: If any groups would like us to come and talk about the jamboree then please contact us at our Explorer meeting

Walton On The Hill Scouting Centenary Ball 22nd September 2007 On Sat 22nd, Walton On The Hill leaders gathered at Aintree Race Course to Celebrate 100 years of Scouting. Over 70 leaders of many ages, from past and present came together for this Black tie event. All the men had tuxes and black ties and the ladies came in ball gowns. Every one looked fantastic! The leaders had a great time with fine food served over 3 courses, then live entertainment followed closely by a disco. The whole evening set in a brillant venue of Aintree race course which meant brillant views across the race course and beyond, as we were based on the second floor in the beechers suite in the Queen Mother stand Thank you to everyone who attended and made the event a great sucess.

In September 2006 specially prepared packs were sent out - one specific to each Section, helping Leaders provide a busy and exciting year of activity for their Scouts. The programme will take you on a journey that helps you and your Scouts explore adventure, international friendship, community and the environment among other themes. Join-in-Centenary is also totally interactive, allowing it to be adapted to suit local needs, local priorities and activities. What to expect Join-in-Centenary provides ideas for your regular Section meetings, you should have enough good quality activities to bring young people into Scouting and to supplement your existing programme. Not every Member across the United Kingdom will be able to attend the 21st World Scout Jamboree so use this resource to bring the Jamboree experience to your weekly meeting. Each month also contains information about the key dates and events that are happening during that month. You will find the dates of Centenary events that are being planned nationally and festivals that you may wish to link with your programme.
How do I get my copy? Hard copies of the Join-in-Centenary booklets, wallcharts and stickers have been mailed to each Section, via Group Scout Leaders, District Commissioners and County/Area Commissioners. Make sure you ask your relevant line manager for your Section's copy. You can also choose to download the programme content from the national 2007 website at http://www.scouts.org.uk/jic/ , either as a complete document or for the relevant Centenary month. Extra support for the programmes is available on the website, in the form of printable resources and internet links. ——————————————————————— Scouting started in 1907, with an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in the UK for 20 boys from a wide variety of social backgrounds. Today, Scouting is a million times bigger than when it first started. It involves girls and boys, men and women from every race, religion and culture, and nearly every country in the world. In 2007, Scouting celebrates its worldwide Centenary. This is an opportunity to promote the values, benefits and achievements of Scouting to the world, and also for the millions of Scouts around the world to make a real difference to the lives of others through their Centenary activities. |
The 100 years of Scouting Celebration is now coming to a close. We hope you enjoyed the activities, camps and new friends you made. Let looked forward to 2008 and the next 100 years. If you have any stories or pictures from 2007 please send them in! |
